The Polyphenol Antioxidant Health Benefits of Green Tea Extract

benefits of green tea extractGreen tea extract, a condensed supplemental form of green tea could be among the most powerful free-radical scavengers that we know of, as outlined by research by scientists at the Annamalai University in India.

The results of this research was published in the Journal of Food Biochemistry January 2011 issue.

Free-radicals harm DNA at the cellular levels and are therefore a key source of aging. Free-radicals have already been connected to heart disease, cancers, immune system impairment, brain cell deterioration and skin damage.

The volatile and damaging nature of these free-radical molecules can be neutralized and therefore rendered inert by antioxidants like the potent polyphenol antioxidants present in green tea along with other various plant foods. Polyphenol antioxidants are free-radical scavengers (as are all antioxidants) that decrease the harmful activities of free-radicals, therefore greatly reducing cell damage.

The scientists examined the free-radical scavenging strength of Sunphenon, a faction of polyphenol antioxidants in green tea. They subjected green tea extract to a specific and common type of free-radical called hydroxyl radicals and discovered that green tea extract is one of the most concentrated natural sources of free radical scavenging compounds available. As determined by this study, the scientists expressed that green tea extract is an extremely powerful antioxidant.

This new study contributes even more clinical evidence to prior studies which have also related polyphenol antioxidants, like those present in green tea, to numerous benefits for health. Such benefits include green tea weight loss, enhancing cardiovascular health, assisting digestion and reducing the potential risk of degenerative disorders.
